Located near America's east coast, Durkheim was founded during the colonial days by Dutch settlers. Over the years, it changed hands repeatedly. Now, it seems to be divided between the Three Families almost like different countries. The North Side of the city, bordered by the river and the docks, is in the grip of the Markovs. The East Side, which descends into suburbs and gradually fades away, belongs to Damiano. The West Side, just off the highway, is the territory of the Nealons.
The South Side of Durkheim is probably the most dangerous place to be. Neither side controls it, not even close. Open fighting in the street is no longer a surprise. It's a dangerous place to be, for armed gangsters and civilians alike. There is neither law nor order on the South Side; only the rule of the gun.
