There are various ranks amongst the mafiosi. For simplicity's sake, we'll stick to the ranks the Italian mafia uses.
Outsider - Someone not affiliated with the family but not in contention with them. Outsiders would include the shop owners who pay for protection.
Associate - Associates are slightly closer than outsiders, but not members of the Family. These include the racket bosses and others of similar closeness.
Soldato - The lowest and most common rank in the mafiosi, the Soldatos, or Soldiers, are the 'made men'. The Family takes care of them for life, as long as they take care of the Family. Usually, their jobs are simple. 'Protecting' businesses, serving as bodyguards for more important people, and things of that nature. They may also be called upon to kill for the Family. Soldiers serve in a crew under a Caporegime.
Caporegime - Often shortened to Capo, a Caporegime commands a crew of Soldiers to do the Family's work. A Capo answers to an Underboss. Capos are usually members of the family by blood or by deed.
Underboss - Second to the Don, the Underboss is almost always the Don's heir and thus a blood relative. The Underboss oversees the daily affairs of the Family.
Consigliere - The special advisor to the Don, the Consigliere occupies a special place in the mafiosi structure. He is somewhere between the Don and the Underboss, though the Underboss wields more power directly. A Consigliere must be extremely intelligent and is often not related to the Don by blood.
Don - The Don is the head and commander of the family. None question his orders. The Don is always, without exception, related directly to the former don and thus to the founder of the Family.
